Return to Canada Part 2: Getting settled

October is nearly here, and it’s started to feel like Autumn is finally upon us. It’s been another busy month, and I’m finally feeling like I’ve settled in a bit. Things have been certainly been exciting though.

This month was happy 32nd birthday to me, which I celebrated with some friends at Ctrl-V, one of the many VR places that has sprung up over the last year. I had a lot of fun, especially with Beat Sabre… It makes me really want to buy a setup for myself, if it weren’t so expensive. We had a good time catching up at Fionn MacCool’s afterwards, as well.

I finally got moved into my own place. Initially, I just had an old kitchen table, a coffee table, and my bed as the only furniture in my apartment, which was quickly supplemented with a cheap folding chair from Staples (to, you know, have a place to sit). Getting my furniture set up, delivered, and assembled was a lot of work (and cash), but luckily I took a week off between jobs, so I could be home during the deliveries. I was able to get everything set up before starting at MCCG, and since then I’ve been organizing and finding spaces for some of the leftover odds-and-ends. It feels good to have things furnished; it certainly beats hanging out in rooms full of boxes.

I actually ended up (for better or worse) donating / throwing out a whole bunch of things as I was unpacking some of my old boxes. A bunch of old books and DVDs that I didn’t like, some old framed photos that I had in storage for years… Even though I got rid of a ton of stuff before moving out last year, I probably ended up geting rid of 20~30% of the remainder. I wish I would have known ahead of time what I would end up keeping: It would have saved a lot of effort in moving!

This month also included going away parties for Vedran, myself, and Jeky, as well as some other people being let go from Cineplex. Seems like a rough road ahead for that office but I wish them the best. I’ll definitely miss working with many of my former coworkers, and hope I get a chance to work with them again in the future.

I had a stressful but overall good first week at MCCG. Their systems are far more complex than I’m used to, but I’m sure after getting used to things, it will be no problem. Everyone there seems very friendly and nice, and I’m glad to be a part of the team.

I was able to find some time to get out and see Dad and Connie, as well as do a little bit more kayaking with Naoko at Mom’s (though I did tip the kayak over, so not too proud of that moment). It was nice to visit everyone and catch up a bit. This month, not a lot of plans so far, but Thanksgiving is coming up, so I’m looking forward to a get-together. Hopefully now that things are settled, I can have a bit more free time to get out and do some fun stuff.  That’s all for this month!
