Travel woes

I’m writing this on-board my flight from Vancouver to Osaka, and boy has it been a long day. My travel plans have not worked out exactly as planned. It started when late on July 31st, I was emailed to notify me that my flight the next morning from London to Toronto was cancelled and all of my flights have been shifted to the next day. This was a little bit inconvenient, but I was willing to accept it. Maybe a plane was out of commission, and there wasn’t anything in London to go to Toronto. Fortunately, my travel plans aren’t exactly pressing and Vedran and Tiffani were kind enough to put me up for another day, so I was willing to let that one slide.

Where things really started to go downhill was at dinnertime on August 1st, I was once again notified that the London to Toronto portion of my flight was cancelled and all of my flights got bumped another day. Now I know that I’m a national treasure, but cancelling flights won’t keep me from leaving Canada for a little while! After re-re-re-booking my flights back to what they were before (August 2nd), except for the London to Toronto portion of the flight, which I cancelled, I was assured that I could get refunded for my personal expenses due to the cancellation, so I booked a Robert Q shuttle for (ugh) 3:15AM. Shout out to Vedran for giving me a ride and seeing me off at that ungodly hour.

Bonus fun fact: The reasons for cancellation were supposedly ‘weather’. 2 days in a row… 2 clear beautiful days.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I earned it, yum

After getting maybe an hour of bad sleep, I got up to the 2:35AM alarm and got dropped off at Robert Q. The ride to Pearson was uneventful and we arrived right before dawn at 5:30, where the airport was already bustling. My flight to Vancouver was not scheduled until 9AM, but the baggage check and security at Pearson ate up 90 minutes of that, and by the time I got to the gate, I had just under 2 hours to wait, so I was able to enjoy a nice breakfast.

In Vancouver, I there was only 1 hour from when I land to when the plane departs, so I was a little concerned when there was a minor delay in takeoff. I wish I had one of the interactive maps to look at, but unfortunately, I didn’t have anything to look at as I was sitting at a broken display. The stewardess even reset it, but no dice. It was the short flight so I had a lot of my entertainment stowed in my carry-on, so I decided to listen to podcasts and doze a little bit.

Now that’s entertainment!

We landed in Vancouver about 5 minutes before my scheduled boarding time of the Osaka flight, which had me concerned about my luggage making it, but thankfully (???) that flight was delayed by 45 minutes and wasn’t at the gate until after I got there. I hope my luggage is all accounted for!

It’s been a bit of a stressful day, but I was given one mitigating factor on the 10 hour flight… and amazing seat next to the best person you could hope for. Nobody! 2 seats to myself!

Dinner has been served and since I’m bouncing between time zones, I have no idea what time it actually is. Arrival should be in about 8 hours, around 3PM Japan time. Time to knock myself out with half a gravol and hopefully not drool all over myself.
